Pope Leo XIV Visits Cameroon
YAOUNDE, Cameroon. (AP) — Pope Leo XIV arrived in Cameroon on Wednesday, where he delivered an insightful address on the responsible exercise of authority to President Paul Biya. This visit comes after Biya’s controversial re-election last year, which extended his more than forty-year rule in the country.
Addressing Corruption
The Vatican emphasized that combating corruption in Cameroon, a country rich in natural resources, would be a key focus during Leo’s visit. In a speech at the presidential palace, he urged Biya and other officials to break the “chains of corruption” that undermine authority and credibility. He stressed the importance of liberating “hearts from an idolatrous thirst for profit.”
Call for Accountability
Biya, now the world’s oldest head of state at 93, listened quietly as Leo addressed him in French. There were instances during the speech when Cameroonian television cut the live feed, leaving the exact reasons unclear. Leo’s visit aligns with the Vatican’s opposition to authoritarian regimes, highlighting its commitment to promoting democratic values.
Emphasizing Youth and Women
During his speech, Leo expressed that Cameroon must take “a bold leap forward” to ensure greater transparency in public finances, advocating for the involvement of civil society organizations. He remarked that young people and women hold a crucial role in advancing the nation’s progress, calling for their inclusion in decision-making processes.
Crowd Welcomes the Pope
The Cameroonian public warmly greeted Pope Leo, marking the first papal visit since Pope Benedict XVI in 2009. People lined the streets, celebrating his arrival with enthusiasm. Gerald Mambeh, a local teacher, emphasized the need for the pope’s visit to inspire genuine accountability rather than mere symbolism to foster lasting peace.
Issues of Resource Management
Despite Cameroon’s wealth in resources such as oil and diamonds, rights groups argue that local communities often do not benefit from these riches. Leo stated that transparency in public resource management is vital for rebuilding trust in governance. He urged that a more equitable distribution of resources is essential to address grievances often leading to violence.
Temporary Pause in Conflict
As a significant gesture, English-speaking separatists announced a three-day cessation of hostilities to allow safe travel during the pope’s visit. This truce reflects the deep spiritual significance of the occasion. Biya acknowledged the need for peace and tolerance, welcoming Leo’s message of justice and love as vital for overcoming current challenges.
