Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary Set for Digital Release
Ryan Gosling’s film Project Hail Mary is set to launch on digital streaming platforms this week as it continues to perform strongly at the global box office.
Adapted from Andy Weir’s bestselling novel, Project Hail Mary debuted in theaters on March 20. In the movie, Gosling plays Ryland Grace, an astronaut who discovers himself light-years from Earth with no memories of how he arrived on the spacecraft. As he begins to regain his memories, Ryland embarks on a mission to uncover the cause of a phenomenon threatening the sun’s existence, putting Earth’s population at risk.
During his cosmic journey, Ryland encounters a stone-like alien he names Rocky, voiced by James Ortiz. Together, after overcoming communication barriers, they realize their worlds are both in jeopardy from dying suns, prompting them to collaborate on a solution to save their species.
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Project Hail Mary features a script by Drew Goddard and includes a supporting cast of Sandra Hüller, Milana Vayntrub, Ken Leung, and Liz Kingsman.
The film is scheduled to be available for purchase or rental on premium video-on-demand starting Tuesday, May 12, as reported by When to Stream. Although the release date is widely anticipated, Amazon MGM Studios has yet to officially confirm it.
In an unusual move for Amazon MGM, the film’s streaming release comes after the studio previously decided to extend its theatrical run, which included a brief re-release in IMAX theaters. Typically, Amazon films head straight to Prime Video about 45 days post-theatrical release.
Project Hail Mary Hits Major Box Office Milestones
So far in 2026, Project Hail Mary has grossed $655.7 million globally, placing it as the second-highest-grossing film of the year, following The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which has garnered $941.2 million. The film’s earnings are evenly split between domestic and international markets, with $327.7 million from North America and $328 million from other regions.
With a production budget estimated at $200 million before marketing costs, Project Hail Mary is still showing in theaters while its PVOD release is just around the corner, scheduled for Tuesday.
