Scottie Scheffler Shines in Round 3 at RBC Heritage

Hilton Head Island, S.C. — The central question at Harbour Town Golf Links had little to do with whether world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler would compete but rather when he would make his move.
After posting rounds of 68 and 67 in the opening two rounds of the RBC Heritage, Scheffler began Saturday sitting at 7-under par, trailing leader Matt Fitzpatrick by seven strokes. It took him just six holes, five of which he birdied, to close that gap to two strokes before he tied for the lead with a remarkable front nine score of 31.
Although he faced challenges on the back nine, he finished strong, birdieing two of his last three holes for a total score of 64, bringing him to 14-under for the tournament and placing him alone in second, three shots behind Fitzpatrick as they head into the final round.
“It feels great to be back in contention,” Scheffler said. “I started today somewhat behind, but I had a solid round that got me back in play. I knew I didn’t need to do anything extraordinary; a nice round would suffice. I managed to start strong and finish well.”
Notably, Scheffler’s success on the PGA Tour has often come from his strong performance on approaches, but as of 2026, he ranks 81st in this category and is searching for his first victory since January’s American Express tournament. He ranked 21st in Round 3 at Harbour Town, relying heavily on scrambling to navigate challenging holes and capitalizing on easier birdie opportunities, making everything inside 14 feet on the front nine.
Scheffler previously won the RBC Heritage in 2024 at 19-under par, becoming the first player since Bernhard Langer in 1985 to secure both the green and tartan jackets in back-to-back weeks. He emphasized that having experience on the course is beneficial, especially as it becomes more challenging later in the day due to firmer conditions and increased wind.
As he prepares for the final round, Scheffler will compete alongside Fitzpatrick, another previous champion at Harbour Town. Following closely are competitors Si Woo Kim, Sepp Straka, and Brian Harman, all sitting at 13-under par.
