Mahela Jayawardene, the head coach of Mumbai Indians, provided an honest evaluation of his team’s performance after their defeat against Punjab Kings on Sunday (June 1) in Ahmedabad.

The season got off to a rocky start with four losses in the opening five matches. However, the situation turned around when Jasprit Bumrah rejoined, leading to six consecutive victories that showcased the team’s potential.

Despite their strong performance earlier, Jayawardene acknowledged that they fell short against Punjab. “We had chances but didn’t play a flawless game, and that cost us,” he said, commending Punjab’s superior batting.

Mumbai Indians posted a solid 203, but Punjab’s Josh Inglis countered aggressively, particularly targeting Bumrah. Shreyas Iyer’s unbeaten 87 played a crucial role in guiding Punjab to victory with a significant partnership with Nehal Wadhera.

Bumrah had an off day, but Jayawardene pointed out that the team’s success wasn’t solely dependent on him. He praised other bowlers like Ashwini and Mitch Santner, noting their contributions while admitting that they couldn’t maintain pressure during crucial overs.
