An Austrian court convicted a man of plotting to attack a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna, according to the Austria Press Agency. The 21-year-old defendant, identified as Beran A., received a 15-year prison sentence for multiple charges related to the planning.
What happened
The state court in Wiener Neustadt sentenced Beran A. on Thursday after he admitted to charges during the trial last month. The court found him guilty of planning to target concertgoers outside the Ernst Happel Stadium using knives or homemade explosives. “I would just like to say that I am sorry,” Beran A. stated in his final remarks.
The plot was foiled, but authorities canceled Swift’s three planned performances in August 2024 in response to the threat. Tens of thousands of fans had traveled to Austria for the concert, many expressing their devastation over the cancellations. Reports indicated Beran A. had also been in contact with Islamic State group members regarding plans for the attack.
Why it matters
The conviction underlines the ongoing concerns about security at large public events, particularly those attracting significant audiences. Concert venues representing high-profile artists like Swift often become potential targets for extremist activities, prompting increased vigilance from law enforcement agencies.
Background
On August 7, 2024, authorities discovered bomb-making materials in Beran A.’s apartment one day before the concerts were set to occur. In the preceding months, he and two co-defendants reportedly plotted attacks in various regions, including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the UAE during Ramadan 2024. Only Beran A. faced charges related to the concert.
What’s next
Beran A.’s attorney, Anna Mair, stated she will discuss the verdict with her client over the coming days, which may include considerations for an appeal.
