Over the past 25 years, the Eagles have undeniably had the most successful period in franchise history.
They’ve made the playoffs 17 times, missing out only eight times during this span. The team has competed in eight NFC Championship Games, winning three (including two in the last three years), and has participated in four of their five Super Bowls, securing two victories.
This era of success has seen a wealth of generational talents emerge within the Eagles organization. Creating a Top-10 player list is bound to spark debates and differing opinions.
Here’s my list of the Top 10 Eagles from the last quarter-century:
1. Jalen Hurts
People often critique Jalen Hurts’ performance compared to his peers, but this nitpicking can obscure the reality. Simply put, Hurts is the most successful quarterback the Eagles have ever had. He embodies the potential that was expected from Randall Cunningham and Donovan McNabb. His stellar performances in critical games, notably his two Super Bowl appearances, affirm this.
2. Brian Dawkins
Regarded as the best defensive player over the last 25 years, B-Dawk is a beloved figure among Eagles fans.
A Hall of Famer, he spent his entire career in Philadelphia, earning four first-team All-Pro selections and seven Pro Bowl nods. His notable hits from his playing days would likely be deemed illegal in today’s NFL.
3. Jason Kelce
For a long time, Kelce wasn’t in the spotlight, which is typical for most centers. That changed dramatically following his memorable speech after the Super Bowl.
Following that moment, Kelce became a star and continued to play at an elite level until retirement, solidifying his legacy as one of the most agile centers in NFL history.
4. Lane Johnson
In contrast to Kelce, Johnson is more reserved and less media-savvy. However, he stands as the best offensive tackle in the league and has been part of three Super Bowl teams, including two championship squads. The Eagles’ performance without him is telling, capping off his legacy as one of the greatest offensive linemen in franchise history.
5. Brandon Graham
Though not a Hall of Famer, Graham is known for his vibrant personality and crucial on-field contributions. Initially seen as a disappointment, he turned his career around and became vital to the Eagles’ defense.
6. Jason Peters
A first-ballot Hall of Famer, Peters is arguably the best left tackle in team history. Interestingly, he didn’t play in a Super Bowl for the Eagles because of an injury during the 2017 season.
7. Fletcher Cox
Cox is likely headed for the Hall of Fame, known for his disruptive presence on the defensive line. Many would argue for his inclusion in the top five, given his impact on the game.
8. Donovan McNabb
This choice may be contentious, as many fans regard McNabb’s tenure as a letdown. However, he was the franchise’s most successful quarterback prior to Hurts and was pivotal, alongside Andy Reid, in launching the team’s success with five NFC Championship appearances and one Super Bowl trip.
9. Zach Ertz
Some may find Ertz’s ranking surprising, but he was key during the Eagles’ 2017 Super Bowl journey, catching the pivotal touchdown pass and setting the single-season receptions record. His impact ranks him above other talented receivers that have graced the team.
10. Brian Westbrook
Often overlooked in all-time discussions, Westbrook was the engine behind the early Andy Reid offenses. His absence before the NFC Championship Game against the Panthers highlighted his importance, as he was equally effective as a runner and receiver out of the backfield.
Honorable mentions include: A.J. Brown, David Akers, Troy Vincent, Hugh Douglas, Jeremiah Trotter.
