SANTA CLARA, Calif. — San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey missed practice on Friday due to a calf issue that emerged during Thursday’s workout. Despite this, he remains optimistic about playing on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.
“I always plan to play,” McCaffrey stated. “I feel good about where I’m at. Unfortunately, my injury history can lead to misunderstandings when I miss practice. But I feel great.” Officially listed as questionable for the game, McCaffrey was seen doing his usual warm-up routine on the sidelines during practice.
Although McCaffrey warming up on the side is not uncommon, he typically joins his teammates for drills. However, he stayed on the sidelines on Friday as well. Coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed McCaffrey’s absence from practice but didn’t divulge more details on the injury, while McCaffrey reassured it was “nothing serious.”
McCaffrey’s addition to the injury report is surprising considering a successful offseason and training camp, where he faced no health issues. Last season, he played in just four games—missing the first eight due to tendinitis and later suffering a knee injury. The 49ers were cautious during practice, allowing him to sit out every third practice, which seemed to work as he was the only running back not hindered by injuries.
If McCaffrey is unable to play, the 49ers would turn to Brian Robinson Jr., acquired from the Washington Commanders, who is expected to start against the Seahawks. Robinson admitted he still has a lot to learn but has been preparing as if he were the starter.
Shanahan expressed confidence in Robinson stepping up if needed, stating, “Brian knows the game plan. You don’t need to master the whole offense, just what’s necessary this week.” Additionally, if both McCaffrey and rookie Jordan James are unable to play, the 49ers may consider promoting Sincere McCormick from the practice squad for added depth.
