A golf club in Mexico has decided to remove a plaque honouring a gargantuan drive struck by Bryson DeChambeau during a LIV event following complaints the shot wasn’t worthy of commemoration, according to Golf Magic.
What happened
DeChambeau unleashed an almighty 391-yard drive on the first hole at Club de Golf Chapultepec during LIV’s stop in Mexico City on April 25, 2025. The American celebrated wildly after finding the green and two-putted for birdie from 35 feet. He was later honoured with a plaque that read, “LIV Golf, Bryson DeChambeau, First Round, 391 YDS, 25 April 2025.”[2]
However, according to Dan Rapaport of Skratch, a member of the club has confirmed that the plaque has now been removed. Rapaport commented, “It was a shot on the first day of the competition and I’ve seen at least two members do the same shot.”
“I can confirm that Bryson’s plaque was removed. It sort of mirrors what is happening to LIV anyways,” Rapaport noted.
Why it matters
The decision to remove the plaque highlights ongoing debates about the significance and merit of commemorative recognition in sports. It raises questions about how achievements are valued, particularly in the context of LIV Golf, which has faced its own controversies.[3]
Background
On May 20, 2025, LIV Golf announced its tournament dates and locations, including the Mexico City event. The tour has been a source of division in professional golf, with various players and organizations expressing differing opinions on its legitimacy.
The plaque’s removal comes as LIV Golf continues to adapt its strategy in response to challenges from traditional golf establishments.
What’s next
DeChambeau is currently in New York competing in the 2026 U.S. Open. He aims for redemption after missing cuts in the first two majors of the year, with the competition set to conclude on Sunday at Shinnecock Hills.
