Celtics
“Our season (with the Celtics) didn’t finish last year as we hoped.”
After spending two impactful seasons with the Celtics, Kristaps Porzingis is now starting a new journey with the Hawks.
With significant luxury-tax penalties looming, Boston’s Brad Stevens had to make tough roster decisions, leading to the departures of key players like Porzingis and Jrue Holiday.
Porzingis, who was entering the final year of his contract for the 2025-26 season, was traded to Atlanta in a three-team deal last month that included the Nets, allowing the Celtics to free up some salary space.
Having aided Boston in clinching a championship in 2024, Porzingis reflected on his tenure with the Celtics during an interview with Lauren Williams of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“Our season (with the Celtics) didn’t wrap up last year as we wished,” Porzingis stated. “However, changes were inevitable for our team. Having a longer summer is always beneficial for players because the NBA season is grueling.”
He added, “Joining mid-season was tough. But this extended break allows me to recharge and prepare for the future. Overall, it’s the ideal situation, and I am very excited about what lies ahead.”
Porzingis contributed significantly to making the Celtics a feared team, showcasing skills in post play, rim protection, and three-point shooting. However, his health consistently challenged his time with the team.
Despite securing a title in 2024, he participated in only seven out of 19 playoff games that Spring due to a calf issue and an ankle injury that required offseason surgery. During the 2024-25 season, he played only 42 games while recovering and later dealt with a persistent illness, averaging 19.5 points along with impressive shooting stats but struggled in the playoffs.
